Why a missing tooth is worth replacing
A missing tooth is not a cosmetic issue. Teeth support each other, and the jawbone under a tooth stays strong because that tooth is being used. Once a tooth is gone, both of those things start to change.
At Dental Concepts Dental Group, our San Jose replacement tooth dentist starts with an exam and imaging so we can see the shape of the bone and the health of the teeth around the gap. From there, we talk through the replacement options that actually fit your mouth, your bite, and your budget.
What happens when a tooth is not replaced
- Neighboring teeth drift. The teeth on either side lean into the space, and the tooth above or below it can drift down or up into the gap.
- Your bite changes. As teeth shift, the way your upper and lower teeth meet changes, which can put uneven pressure on other teeth.
- The jawbone under the gap shrinks. Bone that is no longer being loaded by a tooth root gradually loses volume.
- Chewing moves to one side. Many people start chewing away from the gap without noticing, which loads the other side harder.
- Speech and appearance can change. Front gaps affect certain sounds, and lost bone can change the support of the lips and cheeks.
Keeps your other teeth where they belong
Filling the space stops the teeth beside and opposite the gap from drifting into it, so your existing alignment holds.
Protects the bone under the gap
Replacing a tooth root with an implant keeps the bone in that area working. Where bone has already been lost, bone grafting can rebuild enough volume to support a replacement.
Gets your chewing back on both sides
A replacement tooth lets you chew evenly again instead of favoring one side and overloading it.
Your options for replacing missing teeth
Which option suits you depends on how many teeth are missing, where they are, and what the bone and surrounding teeth look like. These are the routes we take most often.
Dental implants
An implant replaces the root as well as the crown, which is why it is the only option that keeps the bone under the gap loaded. Implants suit a single gap, several separate gaps, or a full arch.
Dental bridges
A bridge fills the gap using the teeth on either side for support. It’s fixed in place; it doesn’t come out, and it’s often a good fit when the teeth on either side already need crowns.
Partial dentures
A partial denture replaces several missing teeth in an arch where healthy teeth remain. It is removable, and it is usually the quickest and least involved option.
Full dentures and implant-supported dentures
When a whole arch is missing, a full denture restores the look and function of the teeth. An implant-supported denture anchors that same arch onto implants so it stays put while you eat and talk. We provide complete dentures, partial dentures, and implant-supported dentures.
What San Jose missing teeth treatment involves
- We examine the gap, the teeth around it, and your bite, and take digital imaging to check the bone underneath.
- We explain which replacement options your mouth can support and what each one would involve, including anything that needs doing first such as treating gum disease or removing a failing tooth.
- We go through timing, the number of visits, insurance, and our financing and membership options before anything is booked.
- Once you decide, we plan the treatment and keep you informed at each stage through to the finished restoration.
If several teeth are involved and your bite needs rebuilding as a whole, we can plan that together as full mouth reconstruction.

FAQs about San Jose tooth replacement
Do I have to replace a back tooth nobody can see?
It is worth replacing. Back teeth do most of the chewing, so losing one shifts that work onto the rest of your teeth. The teeth either side of the gap also tend to lean into it over time, and the tooth opposite can drift into the space. A back gap is less visible than a front one, but it changes your bite in the same way.
What happens to the bone where the tooth used to be?
The jawbone around a tooth root stays dense because the root transmits chewing forces into it. Once the root is gone, that area is no longer loaded and the bone gradually reduces in volume. This is one of the main reasons dentists suggest not leaving a gap indefinitely, and it is why a dental implant, which replaces the root, behaves differently from a bridge or a denture. If bone has already been lost, grafting can often rebuild enough to place an implant.
How soon after an extraction can the tooth be replaced?
It depends on why the tooth came out and how the site heals. Some cases are planned so the socket is preserved with a graft at the time of the extraction, which keeps the site in better shape for a future implant. Others need a healing period first. We’ll tell you what your timeline looks like at the consultation rather than give a figure that may not apply to you.
Implant, bridge, or denture: which one should I choose?
There is no single right answer. An implant replaces the root and stands on its own without involving the teeth next to it. A bridge is fixed and does not involve surgery, but it relies on the teeth either side. A partial or full denture is removable and is usually the least involved route, and it handles multiple missing teeth well. The bone volume, the condition of the surrounding teeth, how many teeth are missing, and your own preferences all feed into the decision, which is why we look before recommending.
Does dental insurance cover replacing a missing tooth?
Coverage varies by plan and by which treatment you have. We accept a number of dental plans including Delta Dental PPO and Premier, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, Humana, United Healthcare, United Concordia, and Anthem, and our team will check your benefits and explain what your plan covers before you commit. We also offer financing options and an in-house membership plan for patients without insurance.
Can I replace several missing teeth at once?
Yes. Several gaps can be handled in one plan. A bridge spanning more than one space, a partial denture replacing several teeth across an arch, multiple implants, or an implant-supported denture for a full arch. Planning them together usually produces a better result for your bite than replacing teeth one at a time, and it often means fewer separate appointments.
Is it too late if I lost the tooth years ago?
Usually not. Teeth will have shifted, and bone will have reduced, so the plan may involve extra steps such as grafting or adjusting the bite, but long-standing gaps are routinely restored. Book an exam, and we’ll tell you what your options are now.
